Opening reception for "The Obituary of Moses Marques"
an illustrated exhibit by Sarah Marques

Some cat lovers photograph and video their beloved pets. Others write poems about or paint portraits of them. And then, there’s Sarah Marques of Bronxville, a talented fine artist who spent 10 years creating a graphic elegy to Moses, the street cat she rescued.
This 14-panel, black and white, hand-drawn and lettered exhibit is on display in the Second Floor Gallery at Greenburgh Town Hall. At a cursory glance, the exhibit seems to be an assemblage of prints, but Sarah Marques meticulously painted each line and figure in every frame!
In her artist’s statement, Ms. Marques states that “The Illustrated Obituary of Moses Marques” is a memoir that commemorates my life with Moses Marques throughout our eighteen-year coexistence. I began with a modest four-hundred-word obituary and over time elaborated it with detailed pen and ink drawings. As it grew it became multi-layered and concentrated, like a poem.
“As a stealth memoir, the fictitious obituaries in the exhibit are portals into moments of my life during the span of time Moses was with me, as do the drawings and details of our shared environment. Moses was admirably surreptitious and kind of touchy. She possessed undeviating self-awareness. She was a Bartleby sort of character; all this stuff happened around her; yet, she…maintained.
“From being brought in from the street, and until death returned her to the larger world, Moses’ life unfolded within the relative smallness of apartment interiors. There, she rummaged, faced her fears, refined her palate, confronted homicidal tendencies, and gracefully aged into a life of relaxed birdwatching and restorative lightbulb gazing. I hope this elegy brings her the posterity she deserves.”
The exhibit is free of charge and can be viewed in Greenburgh Town Hall’s 2nd Floor Gallery from 9 am until 5 pm weekdays, thru April 7th, 2026.
