                                Poets "Learn to See"

Eighteen Westchester County poets recently gathered with family and fellow poetry lovers at the Greenburgh Library in Elmsford to celebrate the culmination of their year-long participation in “Learning to See®.”  Brenda Connor-Bey, Greenburgh’s first poet laureate (2007-2010), created “Learning to See®” as a legacy of her tenure. Nine established poets/teachers from the community lead the year-long odyssey based on the idea that there is a tie between visual art and poetry. In each of this year’s 27 workshops, participants explored how painters, photographers, and other creative types show us their worlds, and how writers can transform those visions into their own meaning. Each year, established and beginning poets join the workshops, and in small, intimate settings, produce poems that clamor to be heard by a wider audience. Thus began the tradition of an annual pot-luck supper and public presentation by “Learning to See®” participants.

“Learning to See®” workshops were co-sponsored by Poets and Writers, Inc., Friends of the Greenburgh Library, ArtsWestchester with funds from the New York State Council on the Arts, and the Greenburgh Arts and Culture Committee.  The next series of three-week sessions will begin in September.
