The Art of Silk Ribbon Embroidery
a debut exhibit by
Gusyeva Valentyna
Greenburgh Town Hall, 177 Hillside Avenue, Greenburgh, NY 10607
Artist’s Statement: I am a self-taught embroidery artist. As an individual who immigrated to America in her late 70s, I confront numerous challenges to healthy aging in an adopted country. Like many women in my situation, I have learned that happiness is a skill and a choice.
To confront my loneliness and isolation, I started to learn ribbon embroidery by watching YouTube videos. I have been working with needles and ribbons since 2018.
I view my style as “painting with ribbons” and treat my stitching as if it’s an impressionist artwork. I have learned to look every day for humor, love and beauty. In the words of Gloria Steinem, "The art of life is not controlling what happens to us, but using what happens to us."
